Call to Action: Colorado BON Proposed Changes for Prescriptive Authority

Hello everyone,

We are writing to you all regarding the upcoming proposed changes from the Colorado Board of Nursing (BON)  in regards to how full prescriptive authority will be obtained. The proposed changes will impact Family Nurse Practitioners (FNP) the greatest, please see the outline below for specific proposed changes as well as the link to the full draft rule. 

Colorado Nurses Association (CNA) Executive Director, Colleen Casper and Laura Rosenthal, President have been working hard to connect with legal partners and AANP advocates. Please consider how this will impact your practice as an NP, future NP practice, and most importantly your patients and access to care. Below are several ways to get involved to share your thoughts, concerns, and innovative ideas. Save the date for Friday, September 8th and plan to attend or submit your comments prior to this date.

  1. To obtain Full Prescriptive Authority in a Population Focus, the following shall be documented as part of the 750 hours of Mentorship:

(1) Family and Individuals Across the Lifespan;

  1. (a) Primary Care - 350 Clinical Hours with a corresponding mentor 
  1. (b) Pediatrics - 150 Clinical Hours with a corresponding mentor
  1. (c) Adult - 150 Clinical Hours with a corresponding mentor
  1. (d) Geriatric - 50 Clinical Hours with a corresponding mentor
  1. (e) Women’s Health - 50 Clinical Hours with a corresponding mentor

Comments provided at the Stakeholder Meeting will be limited to the above referenced topics. All written comments will be provided to the Board before the Board considers adopting the proposed rules.
